our story

Hello there, ice cream lovers!

Thanks for stopping by our humble page. I'm Babak, the owner and creator of Gelatopia, nestled in the heart of charming Montreal. My story began in 2017 when the idea of opening my own ice cream shop first took root. I've always been a big foodie, and calling me obsessed with food, eating, and cooking would be an understatement. My day starts and ends with thoughts of food.

So, it was a no-brainer that one day I'd open a food-related business after spending several years in the corporate world of video games as a project manager. But I promised myself that if I did take that route, I'd ensure the best quality in my products. I told myself that even if I were to sell hotdogs, I’d want people to say they were the best hotdogs they've ever eaten.

My philosophy is simple: if people buy my product with their hard-earned money, then I owe them my best.

Long story short, after years of contemplation, I decided to go with ice cream. Why? Because it puts a smile on people's faces. Ice cream can wash away any sadness, and I want to be a part of that joy.

Many of my flavors are inspired by my travels across different countries, while others come from the amazing international friends I've made here in Montreal. I love learning about their favorite flavors and traditions, and it’s always exciting to bring those influences into my ice cream.

So, in 2019, after years of making amateur homemade ice cream, I embarked on a four-year journey, teaching myself how to make professional-grade ice cream. After many struggles and failed attempts, I can finally say that today, I'm pleased with my recipes. All my recipes have been developed by myself over those 4 years.

I aim to use primarily premium ingredients, with no cutting corners. Do I think my ice cream is perfect? That's not for me to say, but you can rest assured that I work my butt off to create a high-quality product from scratch. And I'd love for you to be the judge of that.

The long-term goal is to open an ice cream shop, but for now, you can find me at public markets or simply order pints online when available.

Hope to see you around!
